Chapter Nine

Stepping out of the Sheriff’s office and onto the boardwalk, I looked up and down the main street. Grace was standing just outside the general store with a small group of townswomen. I could see the women were introducing themselves to the elegant Grace. It was normal for a new mother to be the center of attention when she first came to town. I caught her eyes as I began walking over to the tavern, and she must have seen something in me, for she pulled free of the surrounding women and hurried over.

“What is it?” She asked, her eyes concerned as she gazed up at me, stopping me in place.

“I think the Sheriff’s in league with whoever killed my Pa,” I frowned down at her, “You, Esther, and Delilah should get out of town. I’m sorry you showed up at such a bad time.”

“We aren’t going anywhere,” she said, gripping my arm and holding me fast, the town's women were watching us, and as I scanned them I saw most of the women’s faces blush and glance away from my hard stare. I didn’t see guilt or shame on any of their faces, though, and that relaxed a knot in my shoulders.

“We need to get out of this town,” she said, her gaze fierce, “forget these men. We head back to the house and defend it if we must.”

“I have to do this,” I said, staring down into her eyes. I could see the fear in her, but I wouldn’t be turned away from my path. “If I don’t, they’ll steal my fathers lands, and there’ll be little I can do to stop it.”

“Man foolishness…” she said with a flash of anger, there and gone in a second before looking up at me with a fierce gaze, “If you live, you could use a few good hands on your side. Leave that to Delilah and me. Don’t you get yourself killed, John. I have plans for you still.”

The devilish grin she flashed as she turned away sent a shiver of desire coursing through me. She hurried over to the townswomen and began to speak with them. The sun was beating down on the empty street, but the wind was cool, and I remember noting how little sweat I had on my brow. I stepped across the street and pressed in the newly fitted saloon doors and stepped into the darkened interior.

The barkeeper was a short nervous man, and I saw his eyes flit from me to a table in the corner with six men sitting at it. The men quieted down when I entered, their harsh laughter cutting off as six sets of eyes alighted on me with hungry, greedy stares.

One of the men sitting at the table was a great big blonde man, and I recognized him as one of the brothers. I felt my heart racing and anger bubbling up inside as I turned to march over. The anger hit me so hot and fast I
